Some Hits From UConn Head Coach Paul Pasqualoni?s Speaking Engagement In Middlesex County

;

What?s goin on?

UConn head coach Paul Pasqualoni spoke to a ballroom-full at the Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce Breakfast this morning.

Athletic Director Warde Manuel and athletic communications head Mike Enright were at the Crowne Plaza Hotel to support the second-year head coach Pasqualoni, the guest speaker, as was all-important fundriaser Paul Pendergast and Rachel Rubin, President Susan Herbt?s Chief of Staff.

High school coaches and teams from New Britain, Middletown and Xavier-Middletown High were in the house as well as several county dignitaries including Middletown mayor Dan Drew and city treasurer Quentin Phipps, who I shared a table with (Quentin and I are members of the same church in Middletown).

Pasqualoni was good today. He dropped some news including he thinks freshmen guard Tyler Samra and defensive end E.J. Norris are going to make the travel squad. That?s some accomplishment but when you consider Pasqualoni is just coming from the NFL, still has that mindset and is running concepts from the league throughout his own program now, it?s really accomplishment on both of those young men?s parts. Congratulations to them. I didn?t know about Samra but you may recall someone asked I think around recruiting time who I thought could play right away, make an impact or something like that and I said Norris. The kid is long, athletic, still growing and he had a ton of Division I-A offers. Of course, I didn?t know for sure but that kid?s vitals were impressive and I knew someone who saw him play and they said he was a monster so, we?ll see. And no one should be surprised about Samra, especially if you know anything about his high school, Don Bosco Prep in New Jersey.

Other news, not so surprising, junior defensive tackle Shamar Stephen (knee sprain) is out for the opener against UMass next week and junior kicker Chad Christen has solidified the job to replace Dave Teggart.

Pasqualoni said he?s having a hard time naming a captain outside of cornerback Blidi Wreh-Wilson. He said the 16 seniors and the leadership they?ve shown has made difficult the process of picking others.

?I?m having a hard job deciding, ok?? Pasqualoni told the crowd. ?These guys all deserve to be a captain, so we?ll probably go into the season honoring or recognizing, by the week, seniors in this program because they?ve given it to the University of Connecticut and they?re going to give it one more time this year. They really are. They want their legacy to be something special. These guys are all finished in January.?

Pasqualoni began to break down the schedule but eventually turned his head in the direction of the high school players and coaches.

?There?s going to be another Division I program in the Northeast [UMass] right in our region which I personally believe is a good region of football. I?ve always believed in Eastern Football, always, from the time I was in high school,? Pasqualoni, a Cheshire native said. ?You know the problem is people in the Southeast think they invented football. They did not. Football started with Rutgers-Princeton about 125 years ago. That?s where it started. So all you players in the East, all you high school guys, be proud that you play football in the East. Football in the East is as good as it is anywhere in the country I promise you and the players and coaches are just as committed and we feel that way.?

Breaking down opponents: ?UMass is going to be athletic, not going to have the depth, hopefully we have more depth and it?ll be a very, very competitive game. N.C. State is one heck of a football team in the ACC?we then go to Maryland, OK, enough said?that?s going to be an interesting game. It?s going to be an intense deal, be a lot of fun. We?ll be ready to play that one.

?We then go to Western Michigan, you know we lost a heart-breaker [38-31] last year in the fourth quarter. You know, the problem we had early on is that we didn?t have a lot of experience in the fourth quarter. The Vanderbilt game [Week 2, a 24-21 loss in Nashville], third-and-7, we lost it on an interception return for a touchdown. That was not Johnny McEntee?s fault that was my fault. We were going to run it, kick it and play defense and win the game and then we had one of those TV timeouts. All of a sudden ?Coach, there?s a TV timeout.?

?So then I have an extra minute to think?

(Pasqualoni pauses, the crowd erupts in laughter)

?So I brought Johnny over and I said ?Johnny we?re gonna run this [inaudible] route. In the second quarter he hit it for a first down. We got seven to go and it?s going to go right to the sticks, you throw it, we?re going to make this first down, we?re gonna run the clock out and we?re gonna get out of here with a win. Well, they bluffed the coverage. They fooled him. He threw it. It got picked. It went back for six. Johnny was just crushed. I tried to tell him after the game, ?John it wasn?t you. I promise you. It wasn?t you. It was that stupid TV timeout?.?

He went on to talk about the early season losses last year and what he?s told the team about them this year.

?We?ve got to collect these wins early, we gotta get started fast, we?re collecting wins early in the season because if you don?t they?ll come back in the end and they will get you. That?s what happened to us last year so we are coming out faster. We?re more experienced. We?ve got more athleticism and we?re going to be able to handle that.?

One more on the schedule?

??we go to Syracuse, that?s another storyline?then we got Pitt. The last time for Pitt and Syracuse in the Big East so we want to make sure we send them away, the right way?and hopefully we?re playing for something big the first Saturday in December [regular season finale at Cincinnati,? Pasqualoni said.

Indiana inmates accused of running meth ring from prison

INDIANAPOLIS (Reuters) - The FBI said on Wednesday it broke up a methamphetamine dealing ring coordinated by two Indiana prison inmates helped by corrections officers that brought illegal drugs from California to Indiana using postal and courier deliveries.

A federal indictment charged 40 people with a drug conspiracy. All but two of them had been arrested by late on Wednesday, according to FBI spokeswoman Wendy Osborne.

The 26-count indictment said the drug ring also dealt in heroin, LSD and the synthetic drug PCP.

According to the indictment, the methamphetamine obtained in California was sent to Indiana via the U.S. Postal Service, United Parcel Service and couriers.

The two prison inmates approached an undercover law enforcement agent in June 2011 wanting to buy and resell methamphetamine, the indictment said. It described how money was deposited in bank accounts and how the methamphetamine was delivered. The indictment charged that Indiana corrections officers would smuggle controlled substances and cell phones to the prison inmates.

Indiana Department of Corrections Commissioner Bruce Lemmon said his agency was assisting in the investigation.

Michael Jackson nephew appointed co-guardian

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A judge appointed Michael Jackson's nephew on Wednesday to share guardianship responsibilities for the singer's three children, but not without a last-minute effort by some relatives to delay the decision.

Superior Court Judge Mitchell Beckloff named TJ Jackson as the children's co-guardian who will now share responsibilities for raising the siblings, who range in ages from 10 to 15.

The judge made the ruling after considering a letter submitted by singer Diana Ross, who was named in Michael Jackson's will as a potential guardian, and a letter presented by cousins of the singer who sought a delay in the appointment.

Debra Jackson and her son Anthony urged Beckloff to delay his ruling, saying they were concerned that family matriarch Katherine Jackson was being coerced. The pair said they had been ostracized from the family and that the children may not be as excited about TJ Jackson's appointment as has been presented to the judge.

But Beckloff noted that all three children have said they consent to the co-guardianship, and that an independent investigation he ordered showed they "have a very strong, loving relationship with TJ Jackson."

He urged TJ Jackson to consider allowing the cousins to visit the family, but said there was no reason to delay. The appointment means that Katherine Jackson, 82, and TJ Jackson, 34, will share responsibilities for raising the children. If one of them is no longer able to serve, the other would become the children's sole guardian.

TJ Jackson appeared in court for the hearing, but was escorted by deputies and did not speak to reporters afterward.

Debra and Anthony Jackson declined to speak with reporters after the hearing, merely confirming their names and relationship to the family.

Their letter and one submitted by Diana Ross were not filed with the court and will not be made public, court officials said.

Katherine Jackson's attorney, Sandra Ribera, disputed their claims that her client is being improperly influenced.

"Mrs. Jackson is well informed," she said. "Mrs. Jackson is a strong woman who cannot be influenced by anyone when it comes to decisions about these children."

TJ Jackson was appointed a temporary guardian last month when Katherine Jackson was incommunicado during a stay at an Arizona spa with relatives.

Beckloff has said Katherine Jackson is doing a great job raising Prince, Paris and Blanket Jackson, but noted that having a co-guardian will allow for continuity in their lives if she is no longer able to serve.

TJ Jackson was a relative unknown to the public before the recent rift in the family. He performs in a band called 3T along with his brothers and was close to his uncle, Michael, before the pop star died in June 2009 at age 50.

TJ Jackson is a cousin of the children and has remained close to them in the years since the singer's death.

Wednesday's hearing had been expected to be a legal formality and although Beckloff made time to hear the cousins' grievances, the judge didn't waver in his view that the co-guardianship arrangement was appropriate. He noted that it is frequently employed in other cases.

The mother of the two eldest children, Deborah Rowe, has indicated she is comfortable with the arrangement. Michael Jackson's youngest son, Blanket, was born to a surrogate and the mother's identity has never been revealed.

Austria investigates alleged anti-Jewish cartoon

VIENNA (AP) ? Austrian authorities are investigating a cartoon on a rightist political leader's Facebook page that critics say smacked of anti-Semitism by showing a repulsive fat banker with a large hooked nose and what appeared to be Star of David patterns on his cufflinks, an official said Tuesday.

The rightist Freedom Party has called criticism of the caricature politically motivated and said its leader, Heinz-Christian Strache, denies the cartoon posted on his Facebook page Sunday was directed against Jews.

Strache accused his detractors of "trying to link me to something insidious" and said they were seeing Stars of David where there were none. He also said that anyone who automatically assigns ethnicity or religion to a hooked nose is a racist.

Still, the investigation could lead to legal action against those who were responsible for the cartoon.

Thomas Vecsey of the Austrian Prosecutor's office said Tuesday that legal experts will decide in the next few days whether to charge those responsible for the posting with incitement to religious or ethnic hatred, a criminal offense in Austria.

On Tuesday, Strache's Facebook page showed a corpulent banker being fed delicacies by a figure dubbed "The Government." A third figure at the table ? thin, poorly dressed and labeled "The People" ? has a bone on his plate and looks on in dismay. The banker has a bulbous round nose but no patterns appear on his cufflinks.

The caricature appears intended to depict banks as profiting from Europe's financial crisis while ordinary citizens suffer.

However, critics who say they saw Sunday's Facebook posting assert the nose then was hooked and that the cufflinks contained Star of David patterns.

Jewish leader Oskar Deutsch said Monday the caricature depicted Jews in the way Nazi publications did under Hitler.

Abraham Foxman, head of the New York-based Anti-Defamation League, accused Strache of "promoting the anti-Semitic canard that Jews control international finance and manipulate governments to enrich themselves at the expense of non-Jews." In his email to The Associated Press, Foxman also said: "Strache brings shame to Austrian politics and should be repudiated for his anti-Jewish bigotry."

In a posting Tuesday, Strache said he is "vehemently and fundamentally opposed to any anti-Semitism," adding that he has become a victim of "blind hatred and targeted persecution."

Strache's Freedom Party has turned in recent years from overtly anti-Semitic slogans to opposition to Muslim immigrants, and polls regularly show him with more than 20 percent voter support. But the party's backers also include anti-Semites.

Strache has previously been accused of anti-Jewish sentiment, including last year when he compared protests against a fancy ball that attracts right-wing extremists to Nazis persecution of Jews.

Police reported only isolated violence from anti-ball demonstrators. But Strache was quoted as saying the violence was "like Kristallnacht," referring to the 1938 anti-Semitic riots across Germany and parts of Austria that left streets strewn with broken glass from the windows of Jewish-owned property and synagogues. Kristallnacht was an ominous sign of the Holocaust to follow.

"We are the new Jews," Strache declared then to other ball guests, according to Austrian media.

Mars rover Curiosity prepares for test drive

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Scientists on Tuesday prepared to send Curiosity on its first test drive over the billion-year-old rocks of Mars and said a busted wind sensor won't jeopardize its mission of determining whether life could exist there.

Engineers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena turned four of the rover's six wheels in place this week in a successful "wheel wiggle" to test the steering for Wednesday's trek, mission manager Mike Watkins said.

"We are go for our first drive tomorrow," Watkins said.

The rover will move forward about 10 feet (3 meters), turn right, then back up and park slightly to the left of its old spot, Watkins said.

"You will definitely see tracks," he said.

The test drive is part of a health checkup the rover has been undergoing since arriving on Aug. 5. Eventually, the rover could roam hundreds of feet a day over the ancient crater where it landed.

Meanwhile, researchers discovered the damaged wind sensor while checking out instruments that Curiosity will use to check the Martian weather and soil.

The cause of the damage wasn't known, but one possibility is that pebbles thrown up by Curiosity's descent fell onto the sensor's delicate, exposed circuit boards and broke some wires, said Ashwin Vasavada, deputy project scientist for Curiosity.

A second sensor is operating and should do the job, but Vasavada said scientists may "have to work a little harder" to determine wind speed and direction, which are important factors that can determine when the rover is allowed to move.

"But we think we can work around that," he added.

Scientists also continued to test and calibrate Curiosity's 7-foot (2.1-meter)-long arm and its extensive tool kit ? which includes a drill, a scoop, a spectrometer and a camera ? in preparation for collecting its first soil samples and attempting to learn whether the Martian environment was favorable for microbial life.

Smallwares Restaurant Portland

Smallwares Manila clams

bon app?tit is continuing their Portland love affair with an article on ?authentic ethnic eats?. From author Andrew Knowlton,

We?re going to assume that you got the memo about Portland?you know, the city that has more than three times as many food carts as garbage trucks, a seemingly limit-less supply of bicycling baristas, and a TV series dedicated to spoofing its residents. But Portland?s home-grown food trends aren?t the only culinary game in town: We spent a week exploring its incredible ethnic offerings, from chef-driven riffs on global cuisines to the authentic spots that inspire them.

?The focus is on Smallwares/Barwares, Bollywood Theater, Luc Lac Vietnames Kitchen, Nong?s Khao Man Gai, Taqueria Santa Cruz, Ha & VL, Robo Taco, and finally, Ox. Knowlton also mentions his favorite breakfast joints ? Tasty n Sons, Broder, and Beast. Actually, the list just keeps on going, so hop over to the BA site to read the entire article.

"I have a wide-range of food experience - working in the restaurant industry on both sides of the house, later in the wine industry, and finally traveling/tasting my way around the world. Whether you agree or disagree, you can always count on my unbiased opinion. I don't take free meals, and the restaurants don't know when, or if, I am coming."

Luck throws 2 INTs in loss to Steelers

Pittsburgh rallies in fourth quarter to beat Indianapolis, 26-24

Andrew LuckGetty Images

Andrew Luck of the Indianapolis Colts is sacked by LaMarr Woodley of the Pittsburgh Steelers on Aug. 19, 2012 at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh.

updated 3:10 a.m. ET Aug. 20, 2012

PITTSBURGH - Unlike his electric preseason debut, Andrew Luck's first pass against the Pittsburgh Steelers didn't result in a touchdown.

His eighth one did. Just not for the Indianapolis Colts.

Standing on the sideline moments after Pittsburgh's Ike Taylor cut in front of an underthrown pass and raced 50 yards for a score, Luck fumed. But only for a second.

Showing the mental toughness the Colts wanted when they tasked him with helping rebuild a franchise on the fly, the rookie rebounded to help Indianapolis take the halftime lead before falling 26-24 on Sunday night. Pittsburgh rookie kicker Danny Hrapmann kicked four second-half field goals, including the 22-yard winner with 23 seconds remaining.

By then the top overall pick was in a baseball cap after completing 16 of 25 passes for 175 yards. He added a 1-yard touchdown run and the Colts (1-1) held their own against a perennial Super Bowl contender.

"You never want to throw any interceptions, even if they are tipped, bobbled, whatever," Luck said. "I've got to cut down on those, but I think showing we can bounce back from those mistakes and kind of climb out of that hole was a good sign."

Luck certainly won over the Steelers (1-1), who let Luck lead the Colts on three second-quarter scoring drives to turn a 14-0 deficit into a 17-14 lead.

"He's a tough kid," Pittsburgh defensive end Brett Keisel said. "He's a good quarterback. I think he's going to play a long time. (Colts offensive coordinator) Bruce (Arians) is, I'm sure, a happy man."

Even if Luck wasn't particularly thrilled after Taylor sprinted into the end zone to put the Steelers up two touchdowns. Luck didn't expect things to go as easily against the Steelers (No. 7 in the AP Pro32) as they did in a romp over St. Louis last week.

He didn't expect to throw a pair of interceptions either.

"I knew after last week everything wasn't going to be smooth-sailing, you know?" Luck said. "But I think you can learn a lot from mistakes and hopefully not repeating mistakes."

He didn't during a sublime quarter in which he refused to get rattled against the defense that finished No. 1 in the league last fall. Using his mobility to step away from pressure and his vision to find open receivers, Luck didn't look like a guy who won't start his first NFL regular- season game for another three weeks.

"(Luck) was able to come back and put it behind him just like he always has," Indianapolis coach Chuck Pagano said. "We saw the same thing in college. He's able to bring his team back from behind so it was nothing surprising to us to see him come back and put those kind of drives together."

The Steelers aren't undergoing the kind of drastic makeover the Colts (No. 32) are enduring. Still, they have issues of their own, namely getting used to new offensive coordinator Todd Haley's complex scheme.

The results so far are mixed.

Ben Roethlisberger completed 7 of 8 passes during his one drive of work in the opener against Philadelphia last week, all of them quick hitters. His first pass Sunday night ended up in the hands of Indianapolis' Antoine Bethea.

Antonio Brown and Roethlisberger atoned the next time the Steelers had the ball, with Brown doing most of the work. He hauled in an 18-yard pass from Roethlisberger on third-and-11 to extend the drive then put together a highlight-reel 57 yard catch-and-run for a touchdown.

The play was all Brown. He took a screen pass from Roethlisberger, cut to the middle and used some great downfield blocking by running back Baron Batch to get to the end zone. Brown - who has become Roethlisberger's favorite target with Mike Wallace in the midst of a holdout - added some style points by doing a flip as he crossed the goal line.

"It'd give it an 8.5," Brown said about the somersault. "I didn't stick the landing."

And the Steelers didn't stick with it. The play accounted for more than half of the 112 yards of offense Pittsburgh generated when Roethlisberger was in the huddle. Roethlisberger completed 5 of 9 passes for 81 yards and the touchdown to Brown.

"We're making a little bit of progress," Roethlisberger said. "I still think we're leaving a lot out there. We're not playing as good as we could or should, but we're making progress."

So are the Colts.

On the verge of getting blown out, the Colts responded behind their new leader. Luck led a 10-play, 80-yard drive after Taylor's pick and Donald Brown got Indianapolis on the board with a 1-yard plunge.

Luck had it going on Indianapolis' next possession before being undone by a little bad, well, luck. He found rookie wide receiver T.Y. Hilton in stride down the middle only to have the wide-open Hilton throw the ball up in the air. Pittsburgh's Cortez Allen ran underneath it to thwart the drive, but it hardly slowed the Colts.

Indianapolis tied it at 14 when Luck deftly slid into the end zone on fourth-and-goal from the 1, ending a drive in which Luck completed all five of his passes.

Luck got one more chance just before the half, and he made it count. Working exclusively out of the shotgun, Luck led the Colts 31 yards in five plays, giving Adam Vinatieri just enough time - and room - to sneak a kick between the uprights at the halftime gun.

NOTES: Colts DE Robert Mathis left the game in the first quarter with a shoulder strain and did not return. Indianapolis WR Austin Collie underwent a concussion test after taking a blow to the head from Pittsburgh linebacker Larry Foote. ... The Steelers travel to Buffalo on Saturday night while the Colts visit Washington. ... Harrison, Hampton, running backs Isaac Redman and Rashard Mendenhall and linebacker Jason Worilds did not dress for the Steelers. ... Indianapolis backup QB Drew Stanton completed 4 of 13 passes for 69 yards and a touchdown.

Curiosity is new Mars star, but Opportunity's still knocking

For more than eight years, an elite team of drivers has been maneuvering the most unusual of vehicles across treacherous and distant terrain.

The drivers of the Opportunity rover, a 400-pound robot sent to scour the Martian surface for signs of water, have been navigating the Red Planet without much fanfare.

But now, there's a new rover in town.

Curiosity is the souped-up, tricked-out lab on wheels that landed Aug. 5. It has about five times the mass of its predecessor and boasts fancy new gadgets, including a laser-shooting red eye and a chemistry lab in its belly. Unlike its solar-powered elder, the new rover can work through the long winter nights using its nuclear power generator.

It's rather like the difference between driving your parents' beat-up sedan and a brand-new SUV.

Over the last few years, many rover drivers have been pulled from their Opportunity duties and tasked with driving Curiosity. Now the new rover has 16 people on its driving team, while the older one is left with four.

How does it feel to be one of them?

Not so bad, it turns out.

"We're going to be working a few more shifts than we used to ? but we always wanted more shifts anyway, so that's not a problem," said Ashley Stroupe, an Opportunity driver who also worked with its rover twin Spirit before its demise in 2010.

Indeed, the engineers still driving Opportunity insist they aren't jealous of their colleagues. Far from it.

For one thing, many of the men and women driving Curiosity from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in La Ca?ada Flintridge have worked with both rovers, said Matt Heverly, the lead driver for the new mission who cut his teeth with Opportunity. After all, he said, experienced rover drivers are hard to come by.

In fact, Opportunity has taught the Curiosity drivers some handy tricks, said Vandi Tompkins, who also has worked with both vehicles.

When Opportunity got stuck in thick Martian sand, the rover kept turning its wheels, thinking it was driving steadily along. Now, Tompkins said, the drivers make the rover take regular snapshots on its journey so that they know it is making progress.

These sorts of lessons even factored into Curiosity's design, she added. For example, its six wheels have Morse-code hole patterns that will make distinctive tracks in the sand, helping drivers estimate how far the rover has traveled across otherwise featureless dunes.

The scrappy Opportunity has earned the love and admiration of its human caretakers, who have learned to work around the challenges presented by its ailing and arthritic body. When its shoulder joint gave out, the drivers figured out how to properly position Opportunity's arm using its wheels, Tompkins said.

It's the sort of challenge engineers enjoy because it keeps them on their toes, Stroupe said. It may be a while before Curiosity provides that kind of fun.

A good-natured rivalry may yet develop between the two teams once Curiosity rolls away from the spot where it touched down in Gale Crater ? distance records to break, roving life spans to push.

"I'm sure there will be," Heverly predicted. "Things like, 'Who makes the better cookies to celebrate big events?' or something like that."

During Curiosity's testing phase, team members took models of it and the much-smaller Opportunity out to the Dumont Dunes in the Mojave Desert ? a traditional proving ground for Mars rovers ? and raced them up the slope, Heverly said. Curiosity won. But there were no hard feelings.

"We definitely are all on the same team," Heverly said.

For now, the teams remain distinct because Curiosity drivers are working on Mars time, throwing them out of sync with Earth's 24-hour day. But once Curiosity drivers shift back to Earth time sometime before the end of the year, many team members hope they'll be able to work with both rovers.

"It's great to have another rover on the planet again," said Julie Townsend, Opportunity's lead driver. "Since we lost the Spirit rover a couple years ago, Opportunity's been lonely, I think."

Curiosity may now be playing the leading role at JPL and in the public eye, if its 1-million-plus Twitter followers are any indication. But Opportunity will always hold a special place in the hearts of rover drivers like Scott Maxwell.

"It's very much like when you have a first car," he said. "It doesn't really matter what any of your cars are after that, you always kind of love that first car."

Pakistan Down's Syndrome blasphemy case report urged

Pakistan's president on Monday called on officials to explain the arrest on blasphemy charges of a Christian girl with Down's Syndrome who allegedly burnt pages inscribed with verses from the Koran.

There is a growing debate about religious intolerance in Pakistan, where strict anti-blasphemy laws make defaming Islam or desecrating the Koran punishable by death.

Police said the girl, Rimsha, was arrested in a Christian slum of the capital last Thursday and remanded in custody for 14 days after a furious Muslim mob demanded she be punished.

A police official, speaking to AFP on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the case, said the girl was in her teens. Activists say she is 11 years old.

President Asif Ali Zardari took "serious note" of the arrest and called on the interior ministry to submit a report on the case, state media said.

His government was heavily criticised in the West for refusing to reform the anti-blasphemy law, despite the assassinations of a leading politician and a Christian cabinet minister in 2011.

Some reports suggested the girl had been burning papers collected from the rubbish for cooking when someone entered her house and accused the family of burning pages inscribed with verses from the Koran.

Human rights activists say the law is often used to settle petty disputes.

Muslim anger over the alleged incident forced Christians to flee the Mehrabad slum, home to hundreds of Christians 20 minutes' drive from Western embassies.

"These Christians had sought shelter with their relatives in other parts of the city but now they are gradually returning to Mehrabad," a senior official of All Pakistan Minorities Alliance, Tahir Naveed Chaudhry, told AFP.

He said the girl had Down's Syndrome -- a condition which causes various degrees of learning difficulties -- and disputed the age given by police.

"She was just 11 to 12 years old," he said, adding his organisation wanted the hugely sensitive case resolved "amicably".

The Women's Action Forum (WAF), a leading Pakistani organisation fighting for the rights of women, condemned Rimsha's arrest.

Spokeswoman Tahira Abdullah demanded her immediate release and expressed outrage at the "total inhumanity" of the men who lodged the case with police.

Police should have dealt with the case under the Juvenile Justice System, she said, accusing police of not allowing lawyers or civil society representatives to visit the girl.

Punjab governor Salman Taseer was assassinated in January 2011 and minorities minister Shahbaz Bhatti two months later for their opposition to the blasphemy law.

They had taken up the plight of a Christian mother sentenced to death for blasphemy in late 2010. She remains in prison.

Last month, a Pakistani mob snatched a mentally unstable man from a village police station and beat him to death in central Punjab province after he allegedly burned pages from a Koran.

Academy Of Art University ? The Comic Book Club

The comic industry is growing in a lateral way, leading business in a new direction that is hard to track or predict. It?s certainly a very interesting time to be a comic book creator.

Comic books have generally been regarded by the art community as being somewhat of a low-brow form of art, along with their sister mediums like tattooing and graffiti. But that?s changed with the sudden surge of entertainment that seems to point to the conclusion that comics are not only respectable, but are inspiring. Comic readers have known that all along, and few are surprised that mainstream culture in America is starting to catch on to this. Among those realizing the potential of sequential story-telling are colleges that are all clamouring to be ahead of the curve in offering programs tailored for comic book development. Among the leaders in these new curriculums is the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, whose? comic book industry-involved teachers and passionate students are making strides to make sure AAU is the top of the line in comic book education and unrivaled in its rich and engrossing community of creators. This weekend on Bleeding Cool you can read individual testimonies of what AAU has to offer to someone who dreams of creating comic books.

Comic Book Club

Written by Ash Fairless

? The Academy?s Comic Book Club is a place to gather and talk about the latest news in the industry and about comic projects within the university. However it?s also a valuable resource for writers and artists alike. Run by Club president, Matt Harding, and recent graduate Ash Fairless, as well as help from active club members such as Ashton Warren, Marcus Shultz, Jeremy Smith, and many, many more. CBC has begun hosting numerous demos by working industry professionals from Archaea artist, Mark Simmons, to ?Batman and Robin? inker, Mick Gray. These special demos and lectures allow students to ask pros questions as well as learn more about techniques and tools, get an up-close look at professional portfolios and even get a critique or two if time allows.

?When I first came to AAU, I noticed that all the students who were making comics kept it to themselves, hiding in badly lit corners of their dark rooms, afraid to show their work to anybody. One of my main focuses for the club was to create a community that can share what they?re doing with like-minded students within the school. We have students like Marcus Shultz, who?s living in Australia, but always contributes his work for critiques and compilations,? said Matt. ?In the last year I think we?ve established a life-long bond between many of the industry?s future professionals.?

On top of that, Harding has begun Sketchfests ? special Saturdays and Sundays throughout the semester set in AAU?s historic Bradley Hall where artists can come to draw models in superhero-themed costumes wielding a wide array of props. It?s one of the few places where you?ll find Emma Frost and Poison Ivy striking a sultry twenty minute pose for you, while Hawkeye battles Beast on the next stage over. The Sketchfests have grown in popularity over the years, with more and more students coming to utilize the free event?s excellent source of live reference. ?I dressed like the Beast from X-Men, Ash was an awesome girl version of Robin, and we had a Scarlet Witch and Emma Frost, too,? Matt recalled.

Bradley Hall is also used for the club?s main event, the 24 Hour Comic Day. Like the name says, the fall event allows students to gather and use the time to create a comic within 24 hours. Each year the quality of the work is astounding, with a wide range of styles, mediums, comic lengths, and genres being produced all under the same roof. The challenge, while difficult, often proves to be extremely rewarding to those who partake as it helps them hone their craft.

Beyond the free lectures, contests, posing Catwomans, and the occasional midnight premiere of a super hero movie (in costume, of course) the group does give back. This past year the CBC held a comic drive, collecting issues and donating them to the Oakland Children?s Hospital for patients to read during their stay. The members also donated artwork they created as well as art they added to a Star Wars themed sketchbook that were auctioned off on their Ebay Store with the proceeds going to the hospital. This last year the club raised over $600 and donated more than 300 comics to be given to Oakland Children?s Hospital?s Oncology ward in honor of Matt Harding?s niece, Ariel Gariano, a 13-year old girl suffering from cancer, and a resident of the hospital.

With the combination of eagerness of its members to immerse themselves in the comics industry, to promote other AAU comic endeavors, and to give back to the community, CBC has established itself as one of the most active, well-rounded clubs of the Academy.

Comic Book Program

Written By Matt Harding

The Comic Book Program has grown exponentially over the last five years to become one of the country?s leading programs. Many colleges have become aware of the growing popularity of comic books in the field of entertainment, and they?re acting on providing education accordingly. The Academy of Art University is leading the pack, as they?ve developed classes to handle every aspect of Comic Book creation, from the penciling to an end product, like the Figments motion comic. Currently, some of the Alumni that have come from AAU include such artists as Chris Staggs, an Eisner award winner; and Jerome Opena, whose work includes Marvel titles, ?The Punisher,? and ?Uncanny X-Force.?

Many of the students who come to San Francisco seeking to major in Illustration have come are looking to enter the Comic Book industry, and their passion to do so fuels the classes and extra-curricular activities that go on at the school. The Director of Illustration, Chuck Pyle, comments that all he has to do is give some support to what the students are already trying to accomplish, a service he does on a daily basis. ?If it wasn?t for Chuck Pyle?s support and enthusiasm towards the advancement of the Comic Book program, and his excitement at everything the student-run clubs are trying to achieve, we wouldn?t have come half as far as we have,? says Matt Harding.

When a student looking to get into the Comic Book industry finishes his/her fundamental classes, and walks into the Illustration Department in the historical building on Powell Street to begin his/her higher learning, they are introduced to the medium through the class, ?Comic Book Penciling and Inking 1?, taught by the energetic and prolific teacher, Mark Simmons. Mark is the perfect teacher for the class, being a recent graduate from AAU, and current contributor to the industry. He?s written Wolverine stories for Marvel, penciled ?Fraggle Rock? and 2000 A.D. stories, not to mention a litany of secret projects that, no matter how hard we try to get him to talk about them, he is bound by contract to keep his mouth shut. He?s won numerous drawing challenges, including the 24 Hour Comic Book Day. Mark has taken over the on-site responsibilities for Dan Cooney, author of ?Valentine?, who is currently living out-of-state, and teaching online classes. Mark?s wife, Julie Davis, completes the school?s ?Comic Book Power Couple? as she teaches writing and history of comics with inspiring enthusiasm.

Once Mark Simmon?s requirement class is completed, a new student has a plethora of classes to choose from to further his/her education. Mick Gray?s ?Inking for Comics? class is a must, as Mick is one of the most experienced teachers the school has to offer. He?s currently the inker for DC Comics? ?Batman and Robin. He?s inked the graphic novel ?The Joker,? as well as ?Promethea,? by Alan Moore. The guy is a legend! AAU has him teaching kids how to ink with a brush and pen ? a learning experience that no other school can offer. Once he/she has finished that, they can take ?Advanced Penciling and Inking techniques for Comic Books?, the ?Comic Book Collaborative? (the class that produces the Ultrasylvania graphic novel mentioned earlier), ?History of Comics?, ?Writing for Comics?, taught by Brian Schirmer and online with Dan Cooney, and the upcoming ?Motion Comics? class that?s in the works.

All of this is just the beginning for the Academy of Art University, as the students who graduate begin to make an impression in the industry as a whole, and the college begins to morph and change along with the emergence of popularity greatness of the Comic Book Industry.

Keep your eyes glued on San Francisco ?because some of the brightest Comic Book creators yet to come are being born right under your noses!

White House says Obama 'disappointed' by verdict against Russian punk band

WASHINGTON - A White House spokesman says President Barack Obama is disappointed by the two-year prison sentence imposed on a punk band in Russia for protesting president Vladimir Putin.

The sentence handed down to the provocative band Pussy Riot follows a trial seen around the world as an emblem of Russia's intolerance of dissent.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest said Friday, "The United States is disappointed by the verdict, including the disproportionate sentences that were granted."

While the group's behaviour was offensive to some, Earnest said, the Obama administration has "serious concerns about the way that these young women have been treated by the Russian judicial system."

The band members were arrested in March after performing a "punk prayer" to save Russia from Putin.

Once 'The Obama Of Alabama,' Now A GOP Headliner

Mark Almond/AP

Artur Davis, with his wife, Tara, concedes the Democratic gubernatorial race in Birmingham, Ala., in 2010. Since losing that race, he has become a Republican and moved to Virginia.

Four years ago in Denver, Artur Davis took the podium at the Democratic National Convention to speak up for Barack Obama.

"I am honored to second the nomination of the man whose victory tonight takes us closer to becoming what we know America can be," he said.

But now, as President Obama seeks re-election, Davis is on the list of scheduled speakers for the Republican National Convention.

The former Democratic congressman from Alabama, who tried and failed to become the state's first black governor, is now a Republican resident of Virginia.

And this time around, he will be calling for the president's defeat.

From Supporter To Detractor

Davis and Obama have known each other since their days at Harvard Law School. Davis was an early supporter of Obama's presidential campaign ? the first member of Congress from outside Illinois to endorse him.

He was one of Obama's most prominent supporters in Alabama and helped the future president win the state's Democratic primary. But now, Davis says he is disenchanted with the man he helped to victory in 2008.

"Let's not forget, four years ago, Sen. Obama said, 'We're the ones we've been waiting for. We have the capacity to change and to break this gridlock' ? and I think, unfortunately, some of the president's own policies have pushed us further apart."

Davis voted against the president's signature achievement, the health care overhaul, which he said was pushed across with "an aggressive, party-line ... take-it-or-leave-it strategy." In 2010, after four terms in Washington, Davis gave up his safe seat in Congress to run for the Democratic nomination for governor in Alabama. He lost by 24 percentage points.

NPR spoke with Davis in June, shortly after he announced he was leaving the Democratic Party to become a Republican.

"When I look at where I lean on the issues that people are debating today, when I look at where I lean in the questions that are most important to me ? the economy and education ? I see more alignment, more philosophical compatibility, with the Republican Party than I do the Democratic Party," Davis said.

He says there is no tolerance among Democrats for center-right views, such as his own.

A Political Turnaround

Democrats have questioned whether Davis' conversion to the GOP is less a question of dissatisfaction with party ideology and more a matter of sour grapes after losing his bid to become Alabama governor.

Davis' biography is an up-by-the-bootstraps story. He was raised in Montgomery, Ala., by his mother and grandmother after his parents divorced.

He says that while African-Americans have traditionally supported the Democratic Party, Republicans can change that.

"I think that if Republicans talk about growing this economy, talk about overhauling education, and, frankly, govern and operate in an inclusive manner when it comes to race, I think that's the best way to make the case to black voters in the next 10 years," he says.

His role as a headliner at the Republican convention later this month marks a remarkable 180-degree political transformation for Davis. And he carries an important message for the GOP, telling undecided voters that if this man, who was once dubbed "the Obama of Alabama," is now behind Mitt Romney, you can be, too.

Muscular endurance is an essential part with the athletes plus they workout to improve your condition with circuit training. They could develop their cardiovascular condition by alternating exercises. To earn good condition to complete circuit training, make this happen at the very least three to five times weekly. If you need to work exactly the same muscles, you ought to leave an escape that is at least 2 days to begin with the next session. This rest is critical to fix damaged muscles for in order to start learning a cooler.

To win condition with circuit training, you?re able to do the exercises selected for each and every station and these should be from one to two minutes. Weight, age and physical strength need to be considered before commencing any program of circuit training. Alternate between your various types of stations will allow John Romaniello?s The Super Hero Workout parts of your muscles to recoup towards the fullest. No requirement to practice very secure if you are within the beginner stage. You are able to improve the rest time between stations aside from an incredibly intensive training.

The circuit training contains between 8 and 12 workstations. Each of them is completed in a period of 30 to 40 minutes with 1 or 2 minute break between season. While you progress, you?ll be able to improve the time of year and acquire enough time off between seasons. Thus giving the particular perfect circuit training to get a better physical condition.

Researchers validate molecular signature to predict radiation therapy benefit

ScienceDaily (Aug. 16, 2012) ? Researchers at Moffitt Cancer Center, working with colleagues in Sweden, the Netherlands and Puerto Rico, have validated a radiosensitivity molecular signature that can lead to better radiation therapy decisions for treating patients with breast cancer.

The results appeared in a recent issue of Clinical Cancer Research, a publication of the American Association for Cancer Research.

The study examined patients with breast cancer who had been treated with radiation therapy and demonstrated that a radiosensitivity molecular signature (RSI) could predict clinical outcomes exclusively in patients treated with radiation therapy. The radiosensitivity molecular signature (RSI) used by the research team had previously been tested and validated for rectal, esophageal, and head and neck cancers. The technology, which identifies radiosensitivity and radioresistance, opens the door to biologically guided radiation therapy and offers the potential for better outcomes.

"Developing a radiosensitivity predictive assay has been a goal of radiation biology for decades," said Javier F. Torres-Roca, M.D., member of the Experimental Therapeutics program at Moffitt. "This effort supports the emphasis on personalized medicine, where the goal is to use molecular signatures to guide therapeutic decisions."

According to Torres-Roca, approximately 60 percent of all cancer patients receive radiation therapy during their treatment. Yet until now, no molecular diagnostic or biomarker of radiosensitivity had been developed to predict its benefit.

The radiosensitivity molecular signature was developed based on gene expression for 10 specific genes and a linear regression algorithm. RSI was developed in 48 cancer cell lines using a systems-biology strategy focused on identifying biomarkers for cellular radiosensitivity.

This study validated RSI's benefit when researchers found that radiosensitive breast cancer patients had an improved five-year, relapse-free survival when compared to radioresistant patients.

"This study validated RSI in 503 patients in two independent data sets," Torres-Roca said. "We have validated RSI in five independent cohorts totaling 621 patients, so this latest validation study, to the best of our knowledge, makes this technology the most extensively validated molecular signature in radiation oncology."

The successful transition from applying the technology to cell lines to patient application also suggests that the biological basis of cellular radiosensitivity is conserved between cell lines and patients and also across epithelial tumors, Torres-Roca said.

"We propose that RSI is a predictive biomarker of radiation therapy therapeutic benefit for patients with breast cancer," Torres-Roca said. "This novel biomarker provides an opportunity to integrate individual tumor biology with clinical decision-making in radiation oncology."

Torres-Roca's research was supported in part by the National Cancer Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health, through the grant number R21 CA101355 and R21 CA135620; the National Functional Genomics Center; and the State of Florida Bankhead-Coley Foundation (09BB-22).

The RSI technology is owned by Moffitt and licensed to Cvergenx, Inc., an advanced cancer molecular diagnostics company committed to delivering personalized radiation therapy to cancer patients.
